Description
Develop advanced Legal and Diplomatic Spanish through the study of international sanctions, international security and the role of international organisations.
The lesson begins with an introduction to international sanctions, their objectives and the institutions involved in their adoption and implementation, including the United Nations, the European Union and the OSCE. It also considers the Spanish context and the application of restrictive measures.
Students then work directly with an official primary legal source, consulting Articles 39 to 51 of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter on the official United Nations website. A series of comprehension activities examines the powers of the Security Council, measures not involving armed force, collective security, international cooperation and the right of self defence.
A dedicated grammar section develops the use of conditional conjunctions in formal Spanish, including:
si
en caso de que
siempre que
a condición de que
a menos que
salvo que
con tal de que
Students practise the distinction between indicative and subjunctive structures through examples drawn directly from the context of sanctions, restrictions, investigations and regulatory decisions.
The lesson concludes with advanced discussion questions on the effectiveness of sanctions, human rights, national sovereignty, economic activity, political change and the role of the UN and EU. Complete answers are included.
