Description
Civil Law y Common Law is a complete B2 Legal Spanish lesson designed to develop vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening and speaking skills through a comparison of two major legal traditions.
Students begin with specialised vocabulary including consuetudinario, impartir, otorgar, fuente de derecho, marco jurÃdico, carácter vinculante and centrarse en. Matching and gap fill activities allow learners to understand the vocabulary and then use it in context.
The main reading explores key differences between Civil Law and Common Law, including the role of precedent and jurisprudence, written legal codes, legislation and the function of judges. Students first complete a true or false activity and then answer detailed comprehension questions based on the text.
A dedicated listening activity asks students to listen carefully and identify twelve differences between the written text and the audio version. The complete listening transcript is included at the end of the resource.
The grammar section focuses on the present subjunctive, with contextualised examples using verbs taken directly from the lesson, including dividir, buscar, tener, dictar, convertirse, abarcar, centrarse and reflejar.
Finally, six substantial debate questions encourage learners to compare the two systems and discuss precedent, codification, judicial interpretation, globalisation and the possibility of greater convergence between legal systems.
