Description

OPI: Oferta Pública Inicial is a complete five page C1 Spanish lesson designed for advanced students who want to develop their Spanish through the language of business, finance and capital markets.

The lesson begins with substantial specialist vocabulary, including banco suscriptor, capitalización de mercado, accionista, regulación bursátil, acciones, inversor, bolsa de valores, estatuto social, prospecto de emisión, sociedad anónima, valoración de la empresa and CNMV. Students match each concept with a detailed definition before applying this vocabulary to more complex questions about the IPO process.

A substantial reading and listening comprehension activity explores the advantages and disadvantages of an OPI, including access to capital, liquidity, market visibility, regulatory requirements, costs, volatility and the role of the bank acting as underwriter. Students then complete a True, False or Not Mentioned activity.

Students also reconstruct the different stages of an OPI through the fictional case of Tech Innovations SA. The activity covers financial and legal advisers, investment banks, preparation of the prospectus, the roadshow, determination of the share price, commencement of trading, price stabilisation and post OPI reporting.

The final section links students to an external Spanish language article published in 2023 about predictions for the IPO market in 2024. Students analyse the information retrospectively through comprehension questions involving companies including Stripe, Databricks, Ola Electric, Klarna and Reddit.

Complete answers are included, making the resource suitable both for teacher led lessons and independent study.
