Description

A substantial 12 page B1 Spanish lesson designed to develop the language students need to describe changes, trends, percentages and data in professional contexts.

The resource begins with extensive reference tables for the pretérito indefinido and pretérito perfecto, using verbs particularly useful for describing trends, including subir, aumentar, ascender, crecer, incrementar, escalar, mantenerse, estabilizarse, bajar, reducirse, descender, decrecer, disminuir and caer.

Students then develop a rich vocabulary for describing movement and degree of change. Activities cover the relationship between nouns and verbs, expressions such as drástico, paulatino, considerable and ligero, and more expressive trend verbs including dispararse, derrumbarse, desplomarse and trepar.

A major part of the lesson is devoted to interpreting and describing graphs. Students analyse changes in energy imports and clean energy production, complete a contextualised text with appropriate trend vocabulary and then produce their own description using language supplied in the resource.

The grammar section explores the contrast between the pretérito perfecto and pretérito indefinido, focusing particularly on open and completed time periods. Students practise the distinction through professional examples involving investment, energy, mergers and acquisitions, interest rates and financial markets. The lesson also examines the position of nunca in negative constructions.

Further activities ask students to choose the appropriate past tense, conjugate verbs in the pretérito perfecto, correct sentences, describe past trends, transform verbal expressions into nominal structures and construct their own sentences using time expressions, business concepts, trend verbs and percentages.

The resource also includes a listening activity in which students complete a text with numerical information about changes in energy prices and renewable energy between 2014 and 2023.

Complete answers, a model graph description and the listening transcript are included.
