Description

Reestructuración de deuda is a six page C1 C2 Spanish lesson designed for advanced learners who want to develop their Spanish through the professional context of corporate finance, debt restructuring and refinancing.

The lesson begins with an extensive vocabulary activity introducing 18 important financial concepts, including quita de deuda, flujo de caja, vencimiento, suspensión de pagos, deuda privilegiada, deuda quirografaria, refinanciación, solvencia, amortización, apalancamiento, covenants financieros, capital, EBITDA and calificación de riesgo.

Students then work with a substantial Spanish language text about a fictional pharmaceutical company, BioHeal, and its efforts to reduce debt and improve its credit rating through the sale of part of its Chinese business. The text introduces advanced financial Spanish in context, including ratio de apalancamiento, refinanciación, vencimientos, bonos, empréstitos sindicados, líneas de crédito renovables, LIBOR, EURIBOR and puntos básicos.

Reading comprehension is developed through ten true or false statements followed by ten open questions requiring students to identify and explain detailed financial information from the text.

The lesson then moves from comprehension to active professional communication through a refinancing negotiation role play. Students take the roles of BioHeal’s Finance Director and a bank Credit Manager and negotiate possible changes to the company’s debt arrangements. They discuss interest rates, amortisation periods, debt reduction, maturity and financial covenants, while considering the different objectives of debtor and creditor.

The final discussion develops advanced speaking and argumentation through questions about credit ratings, refinancing conditions and the responsibility of credit rating agencies.

The resource includes complete answers to the vocabulary and comprehension activities, together with a final page of role play cards containing language students can use during the negotiation.

The material is designed exclusively for Spanish language learning and does not provide legal, business, financial or other professional advice.
